Mark D. Netherton MD

Anesthesiologist specializing in Pain Management. Dr. Netherton has spent his entire professional career in the Charleston area. He initially worked as an Emergency Room physician at Charleston Memorial Hospital, then as a physician at Lieber Correctional Institute, and later coordinated pain clinics at Carolina Spine Institute and East Cooper Regional Medical Center. He joined the Southeastern Spine Institute's Pain Management Department to continue providing care for patients with chronic pain.

Dr. Netherton stayed local for his education. He attended Charleston Southern University for his undergraduate studies and earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He then completed a transitional internship followed by a three-year Anesthesiology residency at MUSC. This strong foundation in anesthesia led him to focus on pain management in his career.

Board certified in Anesthesiology (since 1997) and in Pain Medicine (since 2002). He was also named a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1991.

Dr. Netherton's focus is on comprehensive pain management for chronic pain conditions. With his background in anesthesiology, he is skilled in interventional pain procedures (such as injections and nerve blocks) as well as medical management of pain. He has decades of experience running pain clinics and emphasizes multi-disciplinary approaches to help patients manage pain. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Netherton served as a Colonel in the South Carolina Army National Guard, where he was Commander and State Surgeon for the SC Medical Command, reflecting leadership and commitment to service in his career.
