About Dr. Hartman

Orthopedic Spine Surgeon with nearly three decades of experience. Prior to joining SSI, Dr. Hartman practiced in Charlotte, NC for 29 years, where he developed a focus on minimally invasive spine surgery with an emphasis on cervical spine procedures.
Education & Training
Dr. Hartman earned his B.S. from Davidson College in 1983 and his M.D. from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1987. He completed a General Surgery internship (1987–1988) and an Orthopedic Surgery residency (1988–1992) at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. After residency, he pursued a Spine Surgery fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute/Tampa General Hospital (1992–1993) under Dr. Glenn R. Rechtine.
Board Certification
Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 1995. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (class of 1998).
Professional Interests
Dr. Hartman specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgery, especially cervical spine surgery, aiming to reduce patient pain and recovery time. He has specific training in micro-surgery and endoscopic discectomy techniques. In addition, he brings a wealth of clinical experience to the team and is passionate about mentoring and collaborating within a large multi-disciplinary spine practice. (Having moved to Charleston, he also remains active in the community, including coaching youth football.)
